Osceola Electric Cooperative is going to offer one high school student a weeklong, all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour was originally inspired by former President, Lyndon B. Johnson, while serving in the U.S. Senate in 1957. In 1958, a rural electric cooperative in Iowa sponsored the first group of 34 young people on a weeklong study of the nation’s capital. Today more than 1,500 students from all across the nation visit Washington, D.C. every summer on behalf of their local electric cooperative.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour takes place every June. During the week in the nation’s Capital, the Iowa contingent will have an opportunity to get an inside look at the Federal government. They will meet with Iowa’s congressional representatives and staff while visiting Capitol Hill. Meetings are also scheduled with leaders of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Furthermore, a tour of the city will take place, which will include visiting historic sites such as the National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery, the war memorials, the Smithsonian museum and more.  Sponsoring a student on the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour is just one more way Osceola Electric Cooperative can demonstrate its commitment to community.

The high schools in the Cooperative’s service area are informed early in the year concerning the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour and each one is asked to submit the names of two students who will be considered as a potential winner of the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Qualifying students must be the son or daughter of a current Osceola Electric Cooperative member. Students must also be in their junior or senior year of high school. Students interested in being considered for the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour may contact the Cooperative or their high school Guidance Counselor. A Participation Form must be completed by the two students recommended by their high school. The deadline for the Participation Form is usually early in March.
